Korea’s dried seaweed exports have achieved record-breaking success in 2024, underscoring the nation’s growing influence in the international food trade. According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, exports reached $850 million between January and October, already surpassing 2023’s annual record of $792 million. The year-end forecast predicts this figure will exceed $1 billion, marking an impressive 27% growth compared to the previous year.
As a global leader in seaweed production, Korea supplies 70% of the world’s market for this versatile and nutritious product. Key trading partners include the United States, Japan, and Thailand, which accounted for $177 million, $175 million, and $84.5 million in imports respectively during the first ten months of 2024. The expansion of export destinations, now numbering 122 countries compared to just 64 in 2010, demonstrates the increasing global appetite for Korean seaweed.
Government initiatives have been pivotal in this success, supporting every step of the supply chain, from cultivation and processing to logistics and export. Oceans Minister Kang Do-hyung affirmed the commitment to further strengthen this sector, stating, “We will continue to bolster exports of premium Korean seaweed while also fostering local production to meet domestic demand.”
To enhance its global trade positioning, Korea is working to secure recognition of its seaweed under the Codex Alimentarius Commission, an international body that sets food standards. This recognition is expected to reduce trade barriers and further boost international demand for this uniquely Korean product.
The remarkable performance of Korea’s seaweed sector highlights the country’s ability to capitalize on growing global demand for sustainable and health-focused food products, while solidifying its position as a trusted partner in international trade.
