Moldova’s grape sector is achieving unprecedented success, with exports to the European Union (EU) now accounting for 74% of its total, up from 36% in 2021. This positive shift reflects Moldova’s dedication to enhancing its agricultural trade and tapping into new global markets.
In the first ten months of 2024, the value of grape exports to EU countries doubled compared to the previous year, reaching 627 million lei. Romania and Poland have emerged as top buyers, underscoring the increasing demand for Moldovan grapes in the European market.
Diversification has been a key focus for Moldova, with the number of export destinations expanding from 23 countries in 2022 to 33 in 2023. New markets, including Sweden, Slovenia, Italy, Lithuania, the United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong, demonstrate the successful efforts of Moldovan farmers and the government in promoting the quality of their produce.
Government spokesperson Daniel Voda highlighted these achievements: “The growing presence of Moldovan grapes in international markets showcases the high standards our producers uphold and the strategic partnerships we’ve built to reach competitive destinations.”
Statistics from Moldova’s Customs Service reveal continued growth in the grape trade, with an 11% increase in export volume and a 33% rise in value in 2023, totaling 84.55 thousand tons valued at $75.67 million.
With the EU now accounting for two-thirds of Moldova’s overall exports, this success highlights the country’s commitment to expanding trade opportunities and supporting its agricultural sector as a key driver of economic development.
