Dhaka, August 30, 2023 – Bangladesh remains steadfast in its aspiration to become a member of the BRICS Group and is willing to exercise patience until the opportune moment arises, as stated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a recent address. The Prime Minister’s remarks were reported in the national press on Wednesday.

During her participation in the recent BRICS summit held in Johannesburg, which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, Prime Minister Hasina addressed criticisms from the opposition regarding Bangladesh’s exclusion from the group during the previous meeting, as reported by Bdnews.24.

Prime Minister Hasina underscored that despite the absence of immediate material gains, Bangladesh has gained increased respect on the international stage through its engagement with the BRICS Group. She labeled her involvement in the South Africa summit as beneficial for Bangladesh, emphasizing the potential opportunities that lie within the BRICS framework.

The BRICS Group has expanded its membership this year to include Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Iran.

During her attendance at the BRICS meeting, Prime Minister Hasina voiced concerns over the weaponization of international standards and principles, emphasizing the importance of unity among Global South nations. She advocated for an end to the cycle of sanctions and counter-sanctions and called for unified efforts against threats, provocations, and conflict. These statements were made during the special events of BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogues in South Africa.

Bangladesh’s continued interest in joining the BRICS Group signifies its commitment to engaging with global partners and fostering collaboration for mutual growth.
