Bangladesh has made a significant advancement in international trade with its first-ever export of tomatoes to Malaysia, offering new economic opportunities for local farmers. A total of 40 metric tons have already been shipped, with an additional 26 metric tons set for export in the coming days. This milestone strengthens Bangladesh’s position in the global agricultural market while ensuring fair prices for its farmers.
As the winter season comes to an end, farmers faced challenges due to an oversupply in local markets, leading to price drops. The new export initiative has provided a solution by connecting them to international buyers, stabilizing incomes, and creating sustainable trade opportunities. Faisal Ahmed, the entrepreneur leading the effort, highlighted the importance of this breakthrough and expressed plans to expand exports to other vegetables.
High-quality tomato varieties, including Bahubali, Beautiful-2, Bipul Plus, PM-1220, and Mintu Super, have been selected for export due to their exceptional taste and texture. Farmers across the region reported abundant yields, but low domestic prices made harvesting unprofitable. While local markets offered tomatoes at $0.07–0.09 per kg in retail and as low as $0.04 per kg wholesale, the export initiative has provided better prices, offering a much-needed boost to the agricultural sector.
The export process, managed by Faisal Ahmed’s Madhumati Agro & Nursery, ensures that tomatoes are collected, packed, and transported to Chattogram port before being shipped in refrigerated containers to maintain freshness. While domestic prices remain low, exporters are offering farmers $0.11–0.12 per kg, ensuring fair compensation and making tomato cultivation more profitable. Since January 25, a total of 40 metric tons have already reached Malaysia, with additional shipments planned.
Looking ahead, there are plans to expand exports to include pointed gourd, bottle gourd, hyacinth beans, and taro stolons, further strengthening Bangladesh’s agricultural trade. Agricultural officials have confirmed that exported tomatoes meet all quality standards, ensuring that international buyers receive premium produce. With the success of this initiative, farmers are optimistic about long-term trade opportunities and economic stability.
This development highlights Bangladesh’s growing role in global food supply chains, creating a more sustainable and profitable future for its agricultural sector.
