Vietnam’s shrimp export industry has kicked off 2025 with strong momentum, recording a 13% increase in export value in January. According to the Việt Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp exports reached $273.3 million in the first month of the year, contributing 35.3% to the country’s total seafood export turnover.

The total seafood export turnover for Vietnam in January was $774.3 million, marking a 3.3% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The shrimp sector is poised for significant growth, with expectations to reach an export value of $4.3 billion in 2025, an increase of $300 million from the previous year.

This promising start positions Vietnam’s shrimp industry to expand its reach in new and existing markets such as Australia, the Middle East, the UK, and South Korea. With the recovery of major shrimp-importing markets like the US, Japan, and the EU, Vietnam stands to benefit from growing global demand. Furthermore, shifts in US tax policies create new opportunities for Vietnamese shrimp in international trade.

The global shrimp market is currently undergoing a rebalancing phase, with leading shrimp-producing countries slowing their production growth. This is expected to help stabilize shrimp prices in the first half of 2025, providing a boost to Vietnam’s competitive edge in global markets.

While challenges such as shifting consumption patterns in China and a forecasted shortage of raw shrimp in the first quarter of 2025 remain, Vietnam’s shrimp export industry is showing resilience. VASEP has called for continued trade promotion activities and bilateral negotiations with international partners to unlock further growth opportunities.

Vietnam’s reputation for producing high-quality, value-added shrimp products is a key strength. Exports to China and Hong Kong surged by 39% in 2024, making China the largest shrimp export market for Vietnam. Additionally, exports to the US increased by 11%. This growing presence in key markets, coupled with free trade agreements, positions Vietnam’s shrimp sector for continued success in the global trade landscape.

Vietnam’s shrimp industry is well-positioned to maintain its upward trajectory in 2025, contributing to the country’s thriving export economy.
