Vietnam’s agricultural export sector is experiencing impressive growth, with fruit and vegetable exports expected to reach an estimated $7.2 billion in 2024. According to the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country has already achieved $6.6 billion in exports by November, reflecting a positive trajectory for the year.

Durian has emerged as a key export, contributing approximately 40-45% of the total export revenue in this category. In August 2024, Vietnam further strengthened its trade relations with China through agreements to export frozen durian and fresh coconuts, opening new avenues for its agricultural products. This has led to a surge in export contracts, including significant orders for up to 1,500 containers of coconut, highlighting Vietnam’s growing presence in global markets.

Vietnam’s agricultural products, particularly coconut and passion fruit, are also gaining traction in the United States, expanding the country’s reach beyond Asia and indicating potential for continued growth.

The rise in demand for Vietnamese produce is also benefiting the broader regional trade. As Thailand faces challenges with agricultural output due to unfavorable weather, Vietnam has seen an increase in exports to meet domestic and re-export needs in China.

Looking ahead, Vietnam is poised to overtake Thailand as the leading exporter of durian to China within the next few years. With the ongoing growth in export value, Vietnam’s agricultural trade continues to strengthen its position in global markets, underscoring the country’s role as a key player in the international trade of fruits and vegetables.
