Vietnam’s durian industry is experiencing an extraordinary boom, reaching a record $3 billion in exports, with expectations for further growth in 2024. This success is driven by the country’s strategic advantage of producing durians during the off-season, positioning Vietnam as the sole supplier of fresh durians when other countries have completed their harvests. As a result, Vietnam has captured a leading role in the global durian trade.

The fruit’s export value has surged by 63.3% year-on-year, with durian accounting for over 50% of Vietnam’s total fruit and vegetable exports. In September alone, durian exports hit nearly $674 million, a significant 24.9% increase from August. This remarkable performance underscores the growing importance of durian as a key trade commodity for Vietnam.

China continues to be Vietnam’s largest market, purchasing over 90% of the country’s durian exports. With the off-season harvest now in full swing, Vietnam is meeting the demand from China, where durians are in high demand, especially ahead of the Lunar New Year celebrations. The increased global demand, coupled with reduced supply from other durian-producing countries, has led to a surge in prices, positioning Vietnam as a key player in the global fruit trade.

Despite the challenges posed by adverse weather conditions and reduced yields, Vietnamese exporters are optimistic about the future. Prices for premium-quality durians have risen, but producers are strategically focusing on short-term contracts to avoid price fluctuations. Experts predict that the total value of durian exports could reach as high as $3.5 billion by the end of the year, further solidifying Vietnam’s dominance in the global durian market.

In addition, the development of frozen durian exports is progressing, with companies working to meet certification standards for this growing market. However, the high prices of fresh durians currently make the export of frozen durian less competitive, with most companies opting to export fresh fruit to capitalize on rising demand.

Vietnam’s durian success reflects the country’s expanding role in global agricultural trade, driven by strong international demand, innovative trade strategies, and its ability to supply unique off-season products.
