A senior official from Taiwan recently visited the site of a major natural gas development project in Alaska, signaling strengthened cooperation and growing trade prospects between Taiwan and the United States.
Pan Men-an, Secretary-General to Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, attended a high-level energy conference in Alaska upon the invitation of United States Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. During his visit, Pan toured Alaska’s northern energy development zone, where a transformative energy infrastructure project is underway. Once operational, the facility will transport natural gas across more than 1,200 kilometers to the Anchorage region.
The visit underlined shared values between both regions in building sustainable partnerships and ensuring long-term energy security. “Despite the freezing temperatures, we talked enthusiastically about building resilience and responsibility as democratic partners in the face of global climate change,” Pan said, highlighting the positive tone of the discussions.
Pan was joined by Fang Jeng-zen, chairman of Taiwan’s state-run energy corporation. Earlier this year, the company expressed its interest in participating in the project as both a buyer and investor, reinforcing Taiwan’s strategic move to diversify its energy sources and strengthen its commercial links with the United States.
If completed, the Alaska natural gas project is expected to export up to 20 million metric tons of natural gas each year. Its location will provide direct shipping routes to Asian markets, significantly reducing transit time and costs by bypassing traditional shipping paths. This development is set to create new pathways for U.S. energy exports and increase trade efficiency across the Pacific.
Taiwan has continued to take meaningful steps toward increasing imports from the United States, particularly in energy, in support of a more balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship. This visit marks a positive stride in that direction and reflects the growing role of energy in international trade partnerships.
