South Korea's ramen export industry is on the brink of a historic achievement in 2024, as it anticipates surpassing the coveted $1 billion mark, fueled by yet another exceptional performance in February.
South Korea's Korea Customs Service reported a significant surge in the export of Korean ramen, known as ramyun, in February, surpassing the previous record set in November 2023.
February witnessed a remarkable 31.5% increase in ramyun exports, amounting to $92.97 million, compared to the same period in 2023. Additionally, the volume of ramyun exports saw a notable 20% rise, totaling 23,000 tons.
The momentum from 2023, where South Korea reported $952.4 million in ramen exports, has set the stage for the projected milestone of $1 billion in 2024.
The United States emerged as the top destination for South Korea's ramen exports in February, followed closely by China, the Netherlands, Japan, and Malaysia.
The surge in ramyun's popularity can be attributed to its frequent appearances in various K-dramas and films, further bolstered by the COVID-19 pandemic, which increased demand for convenient food options.
K-pop's influence also played a significant role in driving ramyun's popularity overseas, with endorsements from prominent figures like BTS member Jimin.
Samyang Foods, one of the leading brands of Korean ramen, experienced remarkable growth in overseas sales in 2023, marking its fifth consecutive year of record-breaking performance.
China and the United States emerged as the largest markets for Samyang Foods, highlighting the global appeal of Korean ramen.
