South Korea’s newly elected President Lee Jae-myung and U.S. President Donald Trump have agreed to work toward a timely and mutually beneficial tariff agreement, reflecting both nations’ commitment to strengthening bilateral trade and economic collaboration.

In their first official phone call following President Lee’s election, the two leaders expressed a shared vision for reaching a “satisfactory agreement on tariff consultations,” according to a statement from Lee’s office. Both sides pledged to advance working-level negotiations aimed at delivering tangible results that will support key industries and promote continued trade growth.

President Trump extended an invitation to President Lee for a summit in the United States, signaling the potential for a high-level dialogue in the near future. Analysts anticipate that the two may meet as early as mid-June during the G7 Summit in Canada.

President Lee, who took office on June 5, emphasized the importance of trade policy, stating that the most urgent task facing his administration is reaching a comprehensive agreement with the United States. With South Korea’s economy deeply integrated into global trade—especially in sectors like semiconductors, automobiles, and shipbuilding—progress on tariff negotiations could unlock new growth opportunities.

The leaders also acknowledged their shared personal experiences, having both survived attempts on their lives last year. The conversation was described as warm and forward-looking, with mutual appreciation for shared interests, including a lighthearted exchange about their enthusiasm for golf.

South Korea has already shown proactive intent by agreeing in April to work with the U.S. on a potential “July package” aimed at lifting reciprocal tariffs before the current 90-day pause expires. Although the recent change in Seoul’s leadership briefly delayed discussions, both parties have now reaffirmed their commitment to a timely resolution.

President Lee also highlighted the need to maintain balanced international relations, recognizing the importance of China as a trading partner while reaffirming the strength of the U.S.-South Korea alliance.

The ongoing dialogue reflects both countries’ shared dedication to economic resilience and strategic cooperation, underscoring the critical role of trade in driving sustainable prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.
