Cheong In-kyo, a distinguished scholar in global trade, has been appointed as Korea’s new trade minister, marking a significant development in the realm of international commerce. Having previously served as a researcher at the prestigious Korea Institute for International Economic Policy and as a professor at Inha University, Cheong brings a wealth of knowledge in trade policies and economic security to his position. His expertise has been instrumental in shaping Korea’s major FTA negotiations, including those with Chile and the United States, further solidifying his reputation as a seasoned negotiator.

 

Cheong’s invaluable advisory contributions to various government bodies, spanning ministries such as finance, industry, and foreign affairs, have further honed his strategic acumen. In August of last year, he assumed the position of president at the Korean Security Agency of Trade and Industry, further demonstrating his commitment to promoting Korea’s economic interests.

 

With an impressive academic background that includes a doctorate in economics from Michigan State University, Cheong’s expertise is complemented by his practical understanding of global trade dynamics. His appointment as trade minister, while not requiring parliamentary confirmation, grants him the title of minister while holding the rank of a vice minister.
