Poland has successfully begun exporting apples to Indonesia, marking a significant milestone in the country’s trade relations with Jakarta. The first shipment of Polish apples arrived as part of the “Garden of Europe” promotional campaign, an initiative co-funded by the European Union (EU) to boost fruit exports to international markets, including Indonesia.
Poland, known for being the world’s third-largest producer of apples, has been working for five years to gain access to the Indonesian market. The campaign’s success paves the way for further growth in Polish exports, as the country looks to address its trade deficit with Indonesia. The apples, renowned for their high quality and modern storage and transportation technologies, are now available in major Indonesian supermarkets like Ranch Market, HERO, Farmers Market, Market City, and Duta Buah.
Maciej Tumulec, the chargé d’affaires ad interim of the Polish Embassy in Indonesia, expressed confidence in Poland’s ability to compete in the Indonesian market. “Polish apples meet Europe’s high standards, and I believe they can stand alongside apples from the US, China, or New Zealand in terms of both quality and price,” he said.
The introduction of Polish apples is expected to further strengthen the trade relationship between the two nations. In 2023, Indonesia’s fruit imports totaled almost 690 million kilograms, with China being the top supplier. Polish apples, however, aim to carve out a place in the market by offering a new, high-quality option for Indonesian consumers.
Poland’s trade with Indonesia has seen positive growth, with total bilateral trade reaching $1 billion in 2024. While Poland currently imports more than it exports to Indonesia, the opening of the apple market is expected to gradually balance the trade relationship. Indonesia and the EU are also in the midst of negotiating a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, which could further boost trade opportunities between the two regions.
