In an exciting step for Philippine trade, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have forged a partnership to unlock the global potential of the country’s agricultural exports.
A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between the two departments outlines a shared commitment to boosting export sales of key commodities such as bananas, mangoes, and seaweed, while promoting high-value crops like coffee and cacao. This collaboration aims to strengthen the Philippines’ position in international trade by addressing market access challenges, lowering trade barriers, and driving innovation across the agricultural sector.
“This partnership will harness the strengths of both agencies to accelerate the growth of Philippine agricultural exports,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. “Together, we’re empowering our farmers and businesses to compete on the global stage.”
The MoA focuses on empowering small and medium enterprises (SMEs), fostering strategic investments, and resolving trade concerns such as tariffs and market entry. As part of the initiative, the DA will establish an Agri-Export Help Desk to streamline export processes and enhance support for exporters.
Additionally, the DA plans to create agricultural commodity councils starting January 2025. These councils will enhance coordination between government and private sectors, ensuring that agricultural exporters are well-equipped to meet the demands of international markets.
Industry partners like the Philippine Exporters Confederation and the Philippine Food Processors and Exporters Organization are also involved, strengthening the alignment of government initiatives with private-sector expertise.
With agricultural exports rising by 21.8% in the third quarter of 2024 to $1.97 billion—accounting for 10.3% of total exports—the Philippines is poised to make even greater strides in global trade. By leveraging market opportunities and focusing on high-value crops, the DA and DTI aim to elevate the Philippine agriculture sector as a global leader in food exports.
