Peru’s avocado industry continues to showcase its strength in global trade, with export values rising significantly even as volumes dipped slightly. As of week 33 in 2024, Peru exported 499,000 metric tons of avocados, generating an impressive $1.044 billion. This represents an 11% increase in value compared to the same period last year, highlighting Peru’s growing influence in the international avocado market. The increase in value is driven by higher global avocado prices, which surged by 31%, averaging $2.16 per kilogram in August.

Peruvian avocados were shipped to 35 markets worldwide, with the Netherlands leading the way as the top destination. Despite a 12% drop in volume, the value of exports to the Netherlands grew due to favorable pricing. Spain, which absorbed 20% of Peru’s avocado exports, saw a similar trend, with higher values compensating for slight reductions in volume. The United States, another key market, maintained its position as a top trade partner, receiving 67,000 metric tons of avocados.

Chile and Asian markets also contributed to Peru’s robust trade performance, further establishing the country as a key player in the global supply chain for avocados. Peru’s continued expansion into international markets reflects its ability to adapt and capitalize on global demand trends, creating opportunities for increased profitability.

Leading avocado exporters such as Westfalia Fruit Perú S.A.C., Agrícola Cerro Prieto, and Avocado Packing Company have played a pivotal role in sustaining Peru’s strong market presence. These companies have strategically positioned themselves to take advantage of high demand in regions such as Europe and the United States.

As the avocado season winds down, Peru’s limited supply has driven prices higher, benefitting exporters and solidifying Peru’s role as a key supplier in the global trade of fresh produce. With favorable conditions for future growth, the Peruvian avocado industry is set to continue thriving in the international marketplace.
