New Zealand’s avocado exports are set for a positive turn in 2025, with expectations of a stronger market performance. After a challenging year for local growers, production in neighboring Australia and Peru is forecasted to decline, giving New Zealand a prime opportunity to increase its international market share.

Australia experienced a surge in avocado production in 2023/24, reaching nearly 151,000 tonnes, but this growth is unlikely to continue. Growers are facing lower prices and higher input costs, which will limit their ability to maintain these levels. This shift is expected to benefit New Zealand, whose avocado industry is now poised for a recovery.

Following a less-than-ideal harvest last season that led to many avocados being sold domestically, New Zealand’s avocado exports are projected to rebound. The country plans to export approximately half of the 6.8 million trays it produces this year, a significant increase from just 1.3 million trays last season.

This export growth will provide a boost to New Zealand’s avocado industry, with anticipated improvements in revenue over last year’s NZ$20 million, far below the NZ$168 million achieved in 2020/21. The rebound reflects a positive trend for both local growers and the broader agricultural trade sector.

With global demand for avocados continuing to rise, New Zealand is in a strong position to capitalize on the expected market shifts, offering new opportunities for trade growth and enhanced export performance in 2025.
