Morocco’s demand for high-quality almonds has reached new heights, with imports surpassing 35,000 tons in the first 11 months of 2024. Valued at $174.5 million, this represents an 18% increase from the previous year, demonstrating the country’s strong position in global agricultural trade.

The steady growth in almond imports reflects Morocco’s expanding market for premium food products. Since 2017, the country has significantly increased its imports of shelled almonds, except for a temporary slowdown in 2022 due to global economic factors. However, trade rebounded in 2023, and by 2024, Morocco’s almond imports had surged to 38 times their 2017 volume.

The United States remains Morocco’s top supplier, providing nearly 99% of its total almond imports. Other sources include Spain, Portugal, Algeria, Italy, and the Netherlands, further strengthening Morocco’s trade connections. Globally, Morocco now ranks among the top 10 importers of shelled almonds, reinforcing its role in international food trade.

Beyond imports, Morocco also cultivates a thriving domestic almond industry, producing 146,000 tons (in shell) in 2023. Additionally, the country exports select quantities of shelled almonds, with 215 tons reaching markets in Denmark, Italy, and Germany in 2024.

With strong trade relationships, increasing consumer demand, and a commitment to agricultural development, Morocco’s almond sector continues to flourish. This growth not only supports local markets but also contributes to the expansion of global agricultural trade.
