Malaysia is taking significant steps to boost its durian exports to China by proposing an integrated management approach for key fruit commodities. The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry plans to extend the mandate of the national agricultural board responsible for pineapples to oversee durian production as well. This strategic move is aimed at capitalizing on the growing demand for Malaysian fruits in the Chinese market and reducing the country’s trade deficit.
A recent milestone in Malaysia’s fruit export success came with the rapid sale of 40 tonnes of fresh durians to China in early October, further underscoring the demand for this iconic fruit. Malaysia’s pineapple exports, while growing, also present significant opportunities, with only 800 containers exported annually despite a demand for 4,000 containers in the Chinese market.
Additionally, efforts are underway to enhance the export potential of village-grown durians, which are expected to provide new income opportunities for smallholders. Key organizations, including the national farmers’ cooperative and marketing authorities, are collaborating to ensure the success of this initiative.
This marks a new chapter in Malaysia’s agricultural export growth, following the successful introduction of fresh durian exports to China after years of negotiations. The focus now is on expanding both durian and pineapple exports to meet global demand.
