Kazakhstan is poised to bolster its grain and wheat exports after an outstanding harvest this year. With over 16.7 million hectares of cereals sown, the country has completed 99.7% of its harvesting, yielding an impressive 26.5 million tons of grain. This achievement not only highlights Kazakhstan’s agricultural capabilities but also sets the stage for increased trade opportunities.

At a recent government meeting, Deputy Minister of Trade and Integration Kairat Torebayev shared that Kazakhstan’s export potential for cereals is estimated at around 12 million tons. This includes a robust 7-7.5 million tons of wheat, alongside 1.4 million tons of barley and 300,000 tons of corn. The growth in exports is particularly noteworthy, with Kazakhstan having exported 1.43 million tons of cereals to China in 2023—an impressive 5.5-fold increase from the previous year. Wheat exports to China surged to 538,800 tons, reflecting a remarkable 15-fold rise compared to 2022.

Torebayev emphasized that Kazakhstan has the potential to expand wheat exports to China and other Asian markets to approximately 1.6 million tons. Additionally, the country is well-positioned to export nearly 1 million tons to Turkey and various Middle Eastern nations. Preliminary agreements have already been established for the export of 600,000 tons of wheat to Armenia and 1 million tons to Italy, with negotiations for 200,000 tons to North African countries currently underway.

In the 2022/23 grain season, Kazakhstan achieved a record-high export volume of over 7.3 million tons of wheat. The main importers included Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and China. With wheat exports totaling $1.91 billion in 2022, Kazakhstan has solidified its status as the 11th largest wheat exporter globally.

Kazakhstan’s commitment to enhancing its grain exports not only strengthens its economy but also positions the country as a vital player in the global agricultural trade landscape. The focus on expanding markets and improving trade relationships is expected to yield positive outcomes for both domestic producers and international partners.
