Japan is making strides in expanding its agricultural exports by targeting 353,000 tons of annual rice exports by 2030, an ambitious eightfold increase from last year. This move is expected to bolster international trade partnerships and enhance food supply resilience.
The Council of Food, Agriculture, and Rural Area Policies submitted a five-year basic plan to Agriculture Minister Taku Eto, outlining strategies to position Japanese rice as a premium export product in the global market. By scaling up rice production for export, Japan aims to create new trade opportunities while ensuring supply flexibility, as rice intended for overseas markets can be redirected for domestic consumption if needed.
The plan also highlights efforts to boost Japan’s food-related trade, including a goal to increase international visitors’ food spending to ¥4.5 trillion and expand revenues from Japanese food businesses abroad to ¥3 trillion by 2030.
With this strategy, Japan is reinforcing its role as a key agricultural exporter, strengthening trade relations, and meeting rising global demand for high-quality rice.
