Italy’s trade performance in 2024 reflects a positive trajectory, with the country recording a robust trade surplus of 54.92 billion euros ($57.5 billion), up from 34.01 billion euros in 2023. This growth demonstrates Italy’s continued strength in global trade, fueled by a solid export sector.

In December, Italy posted a trade surplus of 5.98 billion euros ($6.26 billion), a slight increase from 5.33 billion euros in the same month of 2023. Exports rose by 2.9% year-on-year, showcasing the growing demand for Italian goods abroad. Imports also increased, but at a more modest pace of 1.7%, underlining Italy’s strong export performance relative to inbound trade.

Although Italy registered a trade deficit with European Union countries in December, the overall trend remains positive, with exports to EU nations increasing by 1.4%. The overall trade deficit with the EU narrowed in 2024 to 10.15 billion euros, compared to 11.59 billion euros in 2023, highlighting Italy’s balanced and resilient trade relationships within the region.

This continued surplus underscores Italy’s competitive edge in global trade and its ongoing role as a key economic player in Europe and beyond.
