Indonesia is set to enhance its role in international trade by launching direct durian exports to China, tapping into the world’s largest market for the fruit. This strategic move aims to position Indonesia as a key supplier alongside Thailand and Vietnam while boosting trade efficiency and economic growth.

Parigi Moutong in Central Sulawesi is known for its premium Monthong durians, a variety highly sought after in global markets. Currently, Indonesian frozen Monthong durians reach China through Thailand, but with ongoing improvements in export logistics, direct shipments will soon be a reality. Recent inspections by Chinese customs officials of Indonesian plantations and packing facilities highlight positive progress in developing an export framework.

Industry leaders recognize the trade benefits of this initiative. PT Ammar Durian Indonesia reports that direct shipping from Pantoloan to China will cut transit time from one month to just one week, significantly reducing logistics costs by up to 50%. This efficiency boost is expected to increase Indonesia’s durian exports from 30 to 50 containers annually, expanding market reach and strengthening trade relations.

Indonesia’s durian industry, producing 1.83 million tons in 2023, has strong growth potential. While most of the supply is consumed domestically, aligning with international standards will open more opportunities in the export market. With Chinese regulations requiring high-quality standards, Indonesia is focusing on frozen durians, ensuring compliance while maintaining freshness and affordability.

The Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture has identified 422 villages for durian cultivation to support long-term trade expansion. Central Sulawesi Governor Rusdy Mastura reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening the region’s global trade connections and maximizing export potential.

With China importing 15.6 million tons of durians worth $6.99 billion in 2023, Indonesia’s entry into this lucrative market marks a significant milestone in advancing agricultural trade and supply chain development.
