Indonesia is on the verge of making significant strides in the global electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, as it prepares to export battery precursor materials to major manufacturers, including Tesla Inc. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, announced that exports are expected to begin by January 1, 2025, marking a promising development for both the country’s economy and international trade relations.
The precursors will be sourced from Huaneng New Material Indonesia, a subsidiary of PT Huayou Indonesia, located in the Weda Bay Industrial Park in North Maluku. This state-of-the-art precursor plant, inaugurated in April 2024, is set to produce an impressive 50,000 tons of EV battery precursors annually.
With approximately 65% of the production earmarked for the United States, this initiative not only supports Tesla’s EV manufacturing but also strengthens Indonesia’s position as a vital partner in the clean energy sector. By leveraging its abundant mineral resources, Indonesia is well-positioned to meet the growing global demand for sustainable technologies, fostering economic growth and enhancing international trade dynamics.
Minister Bahlil’s announcement reflects Indonesia’s strategic focus on becoming a key player in the green economy, demonstrating the country’s commitment to driving innovation and sustainability on the global stage. This move is expected to open new avenues for trade and collaboration, showcasing Indonesia’s potential as a leader in the transition to clean energy.
