Huelva, Spain, has reached an impressive milestone in its berry exports, achieving sales of €1.101 billion in the first seven months of 2024. This marks a significant 10.1% increase compared to the previous year, solidifying Huelva’s status as the leading berry exporter in Spain. The province now commands nearly 77% of the national market share, far surpassing Valencia, which holds a distant second place with just 10.3%.

Huelva’s remarkable performance has made it the largest contributor to Spain’s overall export growth of 11.6%, accounting for 7.8% of this increase. This achievement underscores the province’s vital role in bolstering Andalusia’s dominance in the Spanish export market, where the region contributes 80% of total sales. In contrast, the Valencian Community represents only 11.2% of Spain’s exports.

The berry sector in Huelva has significantly contributed to Andalusia’s trade surplus, generating €1.029 million, with exports exceeding imports by a staggering 15 times, based on a modest import figure of €72 million.

Breaking down the export performance by product, strawberries lead the charge, generating €598 million and representing 54% of total sales, with a notable growth of 14.3%. Raspberries and blueberries follow, bringing in revenues of €265 million and €164 million, respectively, demonstrating varying levels of market expansion.

On the international stage, Huelva’s berries have made their mark in 43 countries, predominantly across Europe, with growth noted in 16 of the top 20 markets. Germany stands out as the largest importer, followed by the United Kingdom and France, with the Netherlands, Italy, and Portugal also being significant markets.

In addition to its berry success, Huelva ranks second in Spain’s broader fruit export sector, only trailing behind Valencia in total fruit exports, which also includes cherries and various stone fruits like apricots.

Huelva’s achievements in berry exports not only highlight its agricultural prowess but also contribute significantly to the economic vitality of the region.
