In an inspiring address at the World Trade Organization (WTO) headquarters in Geneva, European Council President Charles Michel called on the global community to embrace a path of strengthened trust, expanded trade, and institutional transformation to build a more inclusive and prosperous world. Delivered as part of the WTO’s Presidential Lecture Series on November 1, Michel’s speech underscored the vital role of cross-border collaboration in confronting today’s complex global challenges.

Welcomed by WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the event gathered diplomats, Swiss officials, international organizations, business leaders, and academics, united in their commitment to shaping a brighter future through cooperation. Michel outlined the potential of sustainable trade partnerships to spur economic growth, connect communities, and protect natural resources, positioning trade as a central force for good.

“The European Union is a testament to the power of cooperation,” Michel declared, highlighting the EU as a model of economic integration and shared decision-making that has fortified the bloc’s global standing. Advocating for a “multipolar” approach, he emphasized that each country and region should have the flexibility to forge its path while benefiting from mutual respect, open dialogue, and shared principles. “We aim to build bridges, not barriers,” Michel stated, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to fostering trade relationships that prioritize stability and reduce dependency.

Central to this vision, Michel emphasized, is the concept of trust. “People must believe in each other and in the agreements we make together,” he said, urging nations to uphold international laws and honor commitments. Michel also stressed the transformative role of trade, describing its capacity to drive innovation, generate prosperity, and advance sustainability and digitalization in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Supporting this cooperative vision, Michel reiterated the EU’s commitment to a strong and effective WTO, commending Okonjo-Iweala’s efforts to modernize the organization. “The WTO’s role in global trade is indispensable,” he remarked, endorsing reforms to the WTO’s dispute settlement system and advocating for policies that ensure equitable participation for both developed and developing nations.

Director-General Okonjo-Iweala responded by lauding Michel’s dedication to a multilateral system that champions inclusive development. “Trade is more than an economic driver; it is a bridge to shared prosperity,” she said, applauding Michel’s vision of a multilateral approach that upholds environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and economic growth.

The event concluded with a discussion between Michel and Okonjo-Iweala, moderated by Professor Muhammadou Kah, the Ambassador of Gambia to the WTO. This dialogue emphasized that open, cooperative trade policies are essential for addressing the pressing economic, technological, and environmental challenges of the future.

This high-profile gathering in Geneva serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role international collaboration plays in shaping a more connected and prosperous world.
