Ethiopia, the birthplace of Arabica coffee, continues to shine in the global coffee trade, earning an impressive $908 million from the export of over 200,000 tonnes of coffee in the past six months. This achievement reflects the nation’s growing prominence in international trade, driven by innovation and significant reforms in the coffee sector.

According to Shafi Umer, Deputy Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), strategic initiatives have greatly improved the quality, production, and efficiency of Ethiopian coffee. These collaborative efforts between the government and stakeholders exceeded expectations, surpassing the initial target of $714 million from 133,000 tonnes of coffee exports.

Building on this momentum, Ethiopia earned over $1.4 billion in coffee exports at the end of the last fiscal year. For the current fiscal year, the country has set an ambitious goal of reaching $2 billion in earnings by exporting more than 400,000 tonnes of coffee. This reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to strengthening its role in the global coffee trade while contributing to economic growth and sustainability.

Ethiopia’s success story underscores the power of targeted reforms and trade-focused strategies, offering a model for leveraging local strengths to create global opportunities. As the demand for high-quality coffee continues to rise, Ethiopia stands ready to meet the needs of international markets, reinforcing its position as a trusted partner in global trade.
