Egypt has achieved a remarkable milestone in its agricultural exports, with mandarin exports to Poland reaching an all-time high during the 2023/24 season. The first 11 months of the season saw Egypt directly supply 6.8 thousand tons of mandarins to Poland, more than doubling the 3 thousand tons shipped during the previous season. This impressive growth has positioned Egypt as the sixth-largest supplier of mandarins to the Polish market, a significant rise from its previous position in the 10th-12th range just a few years ago.

Mandarins have become Egypt’s second most important citrus export, following oranges. While Egypt’s focus has historically been on oranges, this increase in mandarin exports demonstrates the country’s commitment to diversifying its agricultural offerings and expanding its market reach. Poland’s growing demand for fruit and vegetables presents a great opportunity for Egypt’s exports, positioning the country to further capitalize on this expanding market.

Poland’s seasonal mandarin imports typically range from 140,000 to 170,000 tons, and this season is expected to break previous records. While Spain remains the dominant supplier of mandarins to Poland, Egypt’s market share has been steadily increasing. Spain’s share of the Polish mandarin market has decreased from 54-58% to 40-47% over recent seasons, allowing room for other suppliers like Egypt to thrive. Over the past five years, Egypt’s export volume to Poland has grown dramatically, nearly quadrupling since the 2019/20 season.

The rise in Egypt’s mandarin exports is a testament to the country’s evolving trade relationships and efforts to strengthen its presence in global markets. As part of these efforts, the FAO/EBRD Project “Food Security Package SEMED – Diversifying and Adding Value to Export Markets” will host a trade mission in Warsaw on November 14. Egyptian and Moroccan exporters will have the opportunity to engage with Eastern European supermarket chains, opening new doors for growth and collaboration in the region.
