Dhaka has reached a notable achievement with the recent approval to export fresh mangoes to China, marking a significant expansion into a market that spent $172 billion on fruit imports in the first half of 2021.

This green light from China’s General Administration of Customs comes through ‘Announcement No. 94 of 2024,’ following the signing of a phytosanitary protocol during a recent diplomatic visit. This milestone enhances trade relations and offers a lucrative opportunity for Bangladeshi mangoes in China’s growing fruit market.

The move is anticipated to boost Bangladesh’s efforts in export diversification, tapping into a market with an increasing demand for mangoes. China’s import of mangoes has surged fivefold from 2019 to 2020, averaging 84,000 tonnes annually. The price for imported mangoes in China ranges from 120 to 180 yuan ($16.56-$24.84), depending on quality.

The approval follows a proposal by a Chinese delegation to explore mango and other fruit imports from Bangladesh. An expert team’s visit to assess the quality of Bangladeshi mangoes contributed to the favorable decision.

Bangladesh has experienced a remarkable 467% increase in mango exports over the past three years. While the Middle East has been a major market, there is growing potential in European countries such as the UK, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Germany.
