In a noteworthy development, China has seen a remarkable uptick in the export of used cars over the past five years, as reported by the People’s Daily Online.

Since the initiation of a pilot program in 2019 designed to facilitate the export of used automobiles, China has experienced a staggering growth of over 250 percent in 2022, reaching a total of 69,000 units dispatched from the country. This significant increase marks a substantial leap from approximately 15,000 units in the preceding year. Notably, a considerable portion of these exports comprises new energy vehicles (NEVs), with Tianjin municipality emerging as a key player in this arena.

Enterprises operating within Tianjin’s Dongjiang bonded zone have successfully exported a diverse range of vehicles, spanning engineering and commercial vehicles, alongside both traditional and new energy passenger cars. Currently, NEVs constitute over 70 percent of the zone’s total used car exports.

The global market for China’s used cars has witnessed a notable expansion, with exports now reaching more than 140 countries, as highlighted during the 2023 annual conference of China’s automotive distribution industry. Key destinations include five Central Asian countries, various African nations, and parts of Southeast Asia. Notably, Russia has emerged as a significant market since 2022, demonstrating consistent growth.

The Russian market, in particular, has shown promising momentum, while the European market has also gained traction, particularly amid an ongoing energy crisis. This has led to a substantial increase in exports to both Western and Eastern Europe.

In response to the growing demand and potential within the sector, concerted efforts have been made to streamline export procedures and enhance the used car export industrial framework. With a reported 435 million motor vehicles on China’s roads in 2023, the need for new markets is evident, driven by the vast vehicle population and the rapid turnover of cars.

Policy support has played a pivotal role in facilitating the expansion of used car exports. In July 2023, measures aimed at stimulating automobile consumption were introduced, including incentives for exporting used cars meeting specific quality standards. Subsequent guidelines and support measures have been announced, culminating in a recent notice issued on Feb. 7 to expand used car export operations nationwide.
