The strong partnership between Chile and China continues to thrive, with China Eastern Airlines at the forefront of facilitating agricultural trade. During the Chile Week event in Beijing, the growing demand for Chilean cherries in China took center stage, highlighting a remarkable success story in global trade.

In 2023, Chile’s forestry and agricultural exports to China reached $5.444 billion, with cherries accounting for $2.221 billion of this total, according to Chile’s Undersecretary of Agriculture, Ignacia Fernández Gatica. This year, Chilean cherry exports are set to grow by nearly 60%, driven by enhanced logistics and strengthened trade relationships.

Marking the beginning of the 2024–2025 cherry season, China Eastern Airlines launched its first charter flight on November 18, transporting 76 tons of cherries from Santiago to Shanghai. This milestone reflects the airline’s dedication to expanding Chile’s access to the Chinese market and enhancing its reputation as a trusted trade partner.

Since initiating the “fruit charter flight” program in 2014, China Eastern Airlines has been instrumental in creating efficient and reliable transport solutions for Chilean agricultural products. The airline’s “Air Silk Road” has facilitated the seamless movement of goods like cherries, blueberries, salmon, and dried fruits to Chinese consumers.

Recent innovations, including a salmon-specific charter route and a new cargo route linking Miami and Ezhou, demonstrate China Eastern’s commitment to advancing global trade. Collaborations with LATAM Airlines have further optimized the safety and efficiency of Chilean exports, underscoring the strategic importance of air logistics in modern trade.

With approximately 90% of Chilean cherries sold in China, the airline anticipates importing 12,000 tons of cherries this season via both air and sea freight. This achievement aligns with the broader goals of Chile Week, which seeks to deepen trade relations through events in Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and Chengdu, fostering growth and mutual prosperity.

Chile and China’s robust agricultural partnership exemplifies the potential of international trade to drive economic success and strengthen global connections.
