Canadian Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is visiting Sweden this week to meet with Saab AB and Ericsson, with plans to explore investment opportunities and deepen economic cooperation. The visit also includes discussions on a potential economic partnership between Canada and Sweden, according to officials familiar with the plans.
Talks are expected to cover a range of areas, including clean technology, critical minerals, and defense-related investment. Joly will also meet her Swedish counterpart, Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch, on August 18 to formalize discussions on expanding bilateral cooperation.
The Canadian government has been seeking to strengthen ties with European partners as part of its broader strategy to diversify trade and reduce reliance on any single market. Canada already has an agreement with the European Union aimed at creating jobs and boosting cross-border investment.
Later in the week, Joly will travel to Finland to mark the start of construction of a jointly built icebreaker project involving shipyards in Helsinki and Quebec. During her visit, she is also scheduled to meet with Finland’s foreign and defense ministers to expand cooperation in technology, industry, and infrastructure.
These engagements highlight Canada’s continued push to broaden its international partnerships and reinforce economic collaboration with European nations.
