Australia’s avocado industry has reached new milestones in production and trade, as revealed in Avocados Australia’s latest “Facts at a Glance 2023/24 Report.” Supported by Hort Innovation, the report highlights a 30% increase in total avocado production, which reached a record 150,913 tonnes in 2023/24, up from 115,385 tonnes the previous year. The industry’s gross value of production (GVP) rose by 13% to $649 million, while export value climbed an impressive 63% to $96.1 million, signaling growing demand for Australian avocados in the global market.
The Western Australian region led this production surge, supplying over 65,000 tonnes, or 44% of the country’s avocado output, with Queensland close behind at 42%. John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia, emphasized the importance of building on this momentum, stating, “Our avocados are highly regarded in overseas markets for their quality, taste, and health benefits, which strengthens Australia’s position as a reliable supplier in international trade.”
Export volume has skyrocketed over the past three years, with a 600% growth to 21,979 tonnes, representing 14.56% of Australia’s total avocado production. Tyas sees continued trade expansion as a priority: “With increased demand and new markets opening up, Australia’s avocado industry is well-positioned to further elevate its international trade footprint, benefiting producers and the broader economy.”
Domestically, Australians are also embracing the avocado boom, with consumption rising by 25% over the last three years to nearly 5 kg per person. As Australia strengthens its trade relationships and builds new connections, the avocado industry remains committed to delivering premium-quality products that support healthy lifestyles worldwide.
