The International Trade Council (ITC) acknowledges the upcoming visit of Honduran President Xiomara Castro to China, as part of Honduras’s efforts to enhance its relations with Beijing and pursue economic opportunities.
President Castro’s visit, scheduled from June 9 to 13, comes at the invitation of President Xi Jinping and signifies the growing cooperation between Honduras and China. As Honduras seeks to advance its national development agenda, the exploration of new political, scientific, technical, commercial, and cultural horizons is essential.
It is important to note that the establishment of diplomatic ties between Honduras and China in March further solidified their bilateral relationship. This decision led to the cessation of formal relations between Honduras and Taiwan, in compliance with China’s policy of not allowing countries to maintain formal relations with both Taiwan and Beijing.
China’s expanding influence in Central America has prompted countries in the region, including Honduras, to seek closer economic engagement with Beijing. While Central American nations continue to maintain relations with the United States, their pursuit of stronger ties with China reflects their desire for economic diversification and broader international partnerships.
During President Castro’s visit, discussions are expected to focus on areas of mutual interest and cooperation, including trade and investment. The signing of cooperation agreements, as well as the exploration of trade opportunities for Honduran exports such as coffee, are among the key objectives of the visit.
The ITC recognizes the sovereignty of nations to establish diplomatic relationships and engage in economic partnerships based on their national interests. We encourage dialogue and cooperation among countries, fostering an environment that promotes economic growth, trade, and mutually beneficial exchanges.
As the trade landscape continues to evolve, the ITC remains committed to supporting an open and transparent international trading system that benefits all nations. By facilitating constructive dialogue and collaboration, we aim to enhance economic opportunities and contribute to the sustainable development of countries worldwide.
