Chinese President Xi Jinping began his Southeast Asia tour with a visit to Vietnam, emphasizing the importance of preserving global supply chains and strengthening regional trade ties amid current tariff-related uncertainties.
In a message published ahead of his arrival, President Xi highlighted the need for open collaboration and a resilient multilateral trading system, stating, “There are no winners in tariff tensions. We must maintain the stability of global industrial and supply chains and uphold an environment of open cooperation.”
Vietnam and China, key partners in regional trade, are expected to sign around 40 cooperation agreements spanning various sectors, including infrastructure, technology, and connectivity. Among the highlights of this engagement is Vietnam’s commitment to enhancing cross-border rail links supported by Chinese investment — a step aimed at improving logistics and fostering bilateral trade growth.
President Xi’s visit also comes at a time when Vietnam is fine-tuning its trade practices to align with international standards, while maintaining robust economic relations with both China and the United States. Vietnam’s growing role as a strategic manufacturing hub positions it as a key player in global trade flows, with electronics, footwear, and apparel among its leading exports.
Xi’s Southeast Asia trip includes scheduled visits to Malaysia and Cambodia, where further discussions are expected to focus on strengthening connectivity, investment, and trade collaboration across the region.
This renewed focus on supply chain cooperation and infrastructure development signals a shared commitment to long-term economic growth, stability, and trade inclusivity in the region.
