South Africa’s agricultural sector has reached a new milestone with the approval of fresh table grape exports to the Philippines. This achievement, the result of ten years of negotiations, underscores the country’s commitment to expanding international trade and diversifying export markets.

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen highlighted the significance of this development, noting that increased market access drives economic growth and enhances opportunities for South African farmers. Exporters will adhere to the Philippines’ phytosanitary and food safety standards, ensuring high-quality produce reaches consumers.

South Africa’s table grape industry is already well-established in global trade, with 55% of exports going to the European Union and 20% to the United Kingdom. The addition of the Philippines as a new export destination strengthens trade partnerships in Asia and provides fresh opportunities for market expansion.

In the 2022/23 season, South Africa exported 63 million cartons of table grapes, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing to the country’s economic development. The opening of the Philippine market is expected to further boost production and create more employment opportunities, particularly for emerging farmers seeking access to global trade.

This milestone reflects the growing demand for high-quality agricultural products and reinforces South Africa’s position as a key player in international exports. The first shipment of fresh table grapes to the Philippines will mark a new chapter in trade relations, strengthening economic ties and paving the way for future opportunities.
