Thailand has emerged as the leading exporter of dairy products in ASEAN, with its dairy exports achieving an impressive 11.5% growth in 2024. This growth resulted in a total export value of $582 million (19.623 billion baht), showcasing the nation’s growing influence in the global dairy market.
The surge in exports has been particularly notable across key ASEAN markets. Countries like Malaysia, Vietnam, and Indonesia have shown strong demand for Thai dairy products, with Malaysia recording a 64.3% increase, and Vietnam and Indonesia posting growth rates of 30.4% and 27.1%, respectively. Other countries such as Singapore, the Philippines, and Myanmar also contributed to this overall rise, reflecting the expanding market for Thai dairy across the region.
A key factor behind this success is the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA), which allows Thai dairy products to enter ASEAN markets duty-free. This preferential treatment has enabled Thai producers to maintain competitive pricing, further increasing their market share in ASEAN countries. Thai dairy products like yogurt, UHT milk, and soy milk blends have become popular choices, particularly as consumer demand for milk-based beverages grows in urbanizing regions such as Cambodia, Malaysia, and Laos.
Looking beyond ASEAN, Thailand is also making significant strides in global trade. The country’s trade agreements with markets like China, Australia, New Zealand, and Hong Kong have allowed Thai dairy exporters to enjoy tariff-free access to these regions, boosting their international presence. These agreements provide new avenues for Thai dairy products to reach consumers around the world, strengthening Thailand’s position in the global dairy trade.
In addition, Thailand’s government is actively pursuing further trade agreements with emerging markets in Africa and South America, as well as expanding FTAs with South Korea and Canada. These efforts are expected to create even more opportunities for Thai dairy exporters, opening doors to new markets and reducing trade barriers.
As Thailand continues to grow its dairy exports and leverage trade agreements, it is well-positioned to maintain its leadership in ASEAN and expand its influence in the global dairy market. This success highlights the benefits of trade agreements and the importance of maintaining strong international relationships to boost exports and economic growth.
