New Zealand’s horticulture industry is achieving remarkable milestones, with export revenue forecasted to hit a record NZ$8 billion (US$4.5 billion) by 30 June 2025, according to the latest Situation and Outlook for Primary Industries (SOPI) report from the Ministry for Primary Industries. This 12% growth reinforces the country’s position as a leading player in global agricultural trade.

 

Strong international demand for premium produce is driving this success. Kiwifruit exports are predicted to surpass NZ$3 billion (US$1.7 billion), while apple and pear exports are expected to exceed NZ$1 billion (US$560 million) for the first time. Fresh and processed vegetable exports are projected to increase by 7% to NZ$770 million (US$443 million), and cherry exports are forecasted to grow by 7% to NZ$98 million (US$55 million). The avocado sector is set to see an extraordinary rebound, with export revenues soaring by 147% to NZ$91 million (US$51 million).

 

“This is a proud moment for New Zealand’s horticulture sector, showcasing the exceptional quality of our produce and the industry’s resilience,” said Kate Scott, Chief Executive of Horticulture New Zealand.

 

Scott highlighted the need to balance growth with sustainability, stating, “While export revenue is reaching new heights, collaboration with the government is essential to address rising production costs, invest in climate resilience, and protect vital growing regions.”

 

These export achievements also underline the importance of New Zealand’s horticulture industry in global trade. As the third-largest contributor to export revenue within the food and fibre sector, the industry is well-positioned to continue expanding its footprint in international markets. The sector’s ambitious goals, including doubling farmgate revenue by 2035 under the Aotearoa Horticulture Action Plan, align with its commitment to sustainable growth and global partnerships.
