Cambodia is making impressive strides in global trade, with a record $1.79 billion earned from paddy and milled rice exports in the first eleven months of 2024. According to a report from the Cambodia Rice Federation, the Kingdom exported 575,562 tonnes of milled rice to 67 countries, contributing significantly to its trade growth. Although there was a slight 1.6% decrease compared to last year, Cambodia’s rice sector remains a key player in international trade, demonstrating resilience and potential for continued expansion.
China and Europe continue to be vital markets for Cambodia’s milled rice. The Kingdom shipped 109,448 tonnes of rice worth $69 million to these regions, while 283,981 tonnes, valued at $207 million, were sent to 26 European countries. In addition, Cambodia exported 113,792 tonnes of rice to seven ASEAN nations, including Timor-Leste, highlighting the growing demand for Cambodian rice across the globe.
Chan Sokheang, President of the Cambodia Rice Federation, credits the growth to improved production, storage capacity, and quality standards. Strong collaboration between the Cambodian government and the private sector has enhanced the reputation of Cambodian rice, boosting its recognition in international markets. This success is a testament to the positive impact of Cambodia’s focus on quality, innovation, and sustainable agricultural practices.
The varieties exported include fragrant rice, organic rice, white rice, parboiled rice, and japonica rice, meeting diverse consumer needs. In addition to milled rice, Cambodia also earned $1.37 billion from exporting 4.6 million tonnes of paddy rice, further solidifying its position as a major rice exporter.
Government support, including infrastructure development, technical assistance for farmers, and strategic branding initiatives, plays a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of Cambodian rice in global markets. A standout achievement came in November 2024 when Cambodia’s Malis Angkor brand won the World’s Best Rice award for the sixth time at the World Rice Conference in Manila, reinforcing the Kingdom’s standing as a premium rice producer.
Looking ahead, Cambodia has set an ambitious target to export at least one million tonnes of milled rice by 2025, further cementing its position as a global leader in rice trade and contributing to the nation’s ongoing economic success.
