Benin’s vibrant pineapple industry is poised for a significant leap in global trade as exporters prepare to expand their market reach to China. Currently, the West African nation exports around 85% of its premium-quality pineapples to France. However, new developments in infrastructure and strategic discussions are paving the way for a diversified export portfolio.
Known for its Sugarloaf and Smooth Cayenne varieties, Benin produces approximately 3,000 tonnes of pineapples annually, with cultivation concentrated in the humid southern regions. Edouard Choubiyi, manager of Les Fruits Tropicaux, emphasizes the industry’s strengths:“Benin’s pineapples are renowned for their exceptional quality. Recent improvements in farming techniques and inputs have significantly increased yields per hectare. All exports undergo rigorous testing to ensure compliance with global food safety standards.”
The industry is now focusing on entering the Chinese market. Choubiyi shared, “Discussions are progressing to open the Chinese market to Beninese pineapples. We’re optimistic that technical hurdles will soon be resolved, enabling us to start exports to China within a few months.”
To support this expansion, Benin has made significant investments in infrastructure, including the construction of cold storage facilities at Cotonou Airport. These advancements enhance the supply chain, preserving the freshness of pineapples and ensuring their competitiveness in global markets.
The move towards market diversification is expected to reduce the industry’s dependence on a single trading partner, fostering resilience and growth. By tapping into new markets like China, Benin is solidifying its position as a key player in the international agricultural trade arena.
