Brazil’s papaya exports are on the rise in 2024, driven by growing demand from European markets and the fruit’s strong reputation for quality. Data from the Brazilian Fruit Growers Association (Abrafrutas) reveals that exports from January to October reached 35.84 thousand tons, a 14.65% increase compared to the same period in 2023. This growth has generated $47.79 million in revenue, reflecting a 7.39% year-over-year increase and showcasing the fruit’s expanding role in international trade.
EspÃrito Santo remains the leading exporter, contributing 15.85 thousand tons, followed by Rio Grande do Norte and Bahia. Favorable production conditions and a consistent supply chain have ensured Brazil’s ability to meet the growing demand in Europe, where consumers increasingly favor Brazilian papaya for its taste and quality.
Countries like Portugal, the UK, and Spain are the primary importers of Brazilian papaya, with exporters relying on air shipments to deliver fresh, high-quality produce. Doce Fruit, a major player in the industry, has expanded Brazilian papaya’s presence to 15 countries and is exploring opportunities in new markets such as the United Arab Emirates and China. These efforts align with Brazil’s broader strategy to strengthen its footprint in global agricultural trade.
The Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea) and the National Supply Company (Conab) emphasize the importance of sustainable practices and technological innovations in maintaining Brazil’s competitive edge. Meeting international standards, particularly as Europe tightens regulations on chemical residues, has become a focal point for exporters aiming to enhance their market position.
Looking to the future, Brapex forecasts a 15% growth in papaya exports in 2024, reflecting the continued appreciation for Brazilian papaya on the global stage. By focusing on quality, sustainability, and market expansion, Brazil is solidifying its role as a leader in agricultural exports, fostering stronger trade connections worldwide.
