In a historic first, 58 tonnes of garlic were imported through Mongla Sea Port on Sunday, as announced by the Deputy Director of Communication of the Mongla Port Authority in Dhaka on Monday.

A Singapore-flagged vessel docked at the port’s jetty, unloading a total of 229 TEU containers. Among these, two 40-foot containers were loaded with 58 tonnes of garlic.

The vessel departed from a sea port in China on July 18 and arrived at Mongla Port on July 28. The garlic cargo is set to be unloaded following necessary examinations by Mongla Custom House.

From July 1 to July 27, Mongla Port saw the arrival and departure of 57 foreign commercial ships, handling 595,000 tonnes of cargo, 1,474 TEU containers, and 1,349 cars. These vessels carried exports such as jute, jute products, shrimp, white fish, readymade garments, and cotton, while imports included machinery, fertilizer, coal, stone, gas, gypsum, soybean and palm oil, fly ash, and cars.
