The World Trade Organization (WTO) is advancing efforts to modernize global trade regulations, with members emphasizing the need for deeper discussions on reform during the recent General Council meeting in Switzerland. As international trade continues to evolve, the WTO is working toward a more efficient, inclusive, and adaptive system that fosters economic growth and investment opportunities.

Ambassador Ølberg, the outgoing Chair of the General Council, highlighted the importance of collaboration in shaping a stronger multilateral trading system. “It’s time for real dialogue and meaningful reform to ensure the WTO remains a dynamic force in global trade,” he stated. The reform initiative, launched at the 12th Ministerial Conference (MC12) in 2022, aims to enhance the WTO’s role in facilitating seamless trade across markets.

Marking its 30th anniversary, the WTO is prioritizing innovation and adaptability to support sustainable and inclusive economic expansion. Ambassador Saqer Abdullah Almoqbel (Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the newly appointed General Council Chair, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to strengthening trade partnerships and ensuring stability in the global market.

Looking ahead, the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14), scheduled for March 2026 in Cameroon, is expected to drive transformative outcomes. WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala proposed establishing an independent panel of experts to assess areas for improvement, ensuring the organization remains responsive to modern trade challenges.

By fostering global cooperation and refining trade policies, WTO members are paving the way for increased investment, market expansion, and economic resilience worldwide.
