Vietnam has witnessed a remarkable surge in its vegetable and fruit exports, with a staggering 27% increase year-on-year, totaling $1.3 billion. This surge is largely fueled by the growing demand from major markets such as China, Thailand, and Germany.
Data from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) reveals that March alone saw exports reaching $433 million, marking a notable 33% rise from February and a commendable 4% increase compared to the previous year.
The demand from China, which stands as Vietnam's largest market for such exports, has seen an impressive 50% year-on-year increase. Additionally, Thailand and Germany have shown significant growth, importing 120% more fruit and vegetables from Vietnam compared to last year.
Key players driving this export surge include Vietnamese favorites like durian, dragon fruit, and longan, which have emerged as crucial contributors to the country's export revenue.
Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of Vinafruit, remains optimistic about the continued growth trajectory of vegetable and fruit exports, especially with the anticipated surge in demand post-Lunar New Year from China and ASEAN countries. With the approaching harvest season for tropical fruits in the second quarter, Vietnam expects to maintain a robust supply to meet the escalating international demand.
Moreover, Vietnam stands poised to capitalize on its competitive advantage over counterparts in the U.S. and EU, thanks to shorter shipping times and lower costs. This presents a strategic opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen its market share in Asia and solidify its position in the global produce trade.
Looking ahead, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development projects promising growth in the global market for fruit and vegetables, estimated to reach $392 billion by 2025. With its abundant supply and growing prowess in international trade, Vietnam is well-positioned to secure a prominent role in the global supply chain.
