U.S. Representative Mike Gallagher, Chair of the House of Representatives select committee on China, arrived in Taiwan with a delegation of lawmakers to enhance trade relations. The visit aims to engage with Taiwanese officials, including President Tsai Ing-wen and President-elect Lai Ching-te, to discuss opportunities for economic cooperation.
Gallagher, a vocal advocate for Taiwan and a critic of China, emphasized Taiwan's resilience in the face of perceived Chinese pressure, stating, "Time and again, Taiwan has shown the world how to stand up to the CCP's bullying and not only survive but thrive."
Highlighting the importance of strengthening trade ties between the United States and Taiwan, Gallagher reiterated U.S. support for the island nation, emphasizing the role of deeper economic integration in promoting regional stability.
China's claims over Taiwan have long been a contentious issue, with Beijing asserting sovereignty over the island, a position rejected by Taipei. Despite objections from China, Taiwan maintains its autonomy and asserts its right to engage with international partners independently.
During the visit, discussions are expected to focus on enhancing trade cooperation and exploring avenues for increased economic collaboration between the United States and Taiwan.
Gallagher's committee has previously issued recommendations aimed at reshaping U.S.-China economic relations, with a focus on reducing reliance on Chinese markets. Gallagher's efforts to strengthen trade ties with Taiwan align with broader U.S. strategies to diversify trade partners and safeguard against overreliance on any single market.
