In a strong gesture of economic cooperation, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te reaffirmed the island’s commitment to deepen trade relations with the United States by pledging to purchase more American goods, including natural gas, oil, agricultural products, and defense-related technologies.
The announcement, made during a meeting with a visiting U.S. congressional delegation, reflects Taiwan’s strategy to enhance energy independence, promote trade balance, and support shared goals for resilient global supply chains.
President Lai emphasized that the initiative not only contributes to “a more balanced bilateral trade relationship” but also reinforces Taiwan’s role in global energy security and technological development. He also expressed Taiwan’s willingness to contribute to U.S. efforts in revitalizing domestic manufacturing and advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
Representative Bruce Westerman, chair of the U.S. House Natural Resources Committee, welcomed the growing trade partnership, noting the United States’ strong agricultural and industrial output and its readiness to collaborate with trusted international partners.
Economic ties between Taiwan and the United States have experienced significant growth in recent years. Taiwan is now the seventh-largest market for U.S. agricultural exports, and American-bound Taiwanese investments continue to expand — notably, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s $165 billion investment in Arizona to bolster chip production.
As the U.S. evaluates potential trade adjustments, Taiwan continues to foster dialogue with American partners. President Lai described recent tensions as “frictions between friends,” underscoring the cooperative tone both sides wish to maintain.
This renewed commitment between Taiwan and the U.S. reinforces the importance of strong, values-based trade partnerships that drive innovation, create jobs, and promote sustainable economic growth across regions.
