The leader of Moldova's largest opposition party has called for enhancing economic relations with China and urged opposition groups to unite in presenting a single challenger to the pro-European president in the upcoming October election.
The prominent figure emphasized the importance of rebuilding partnerships with traditional allies, suggesting that Moldova's current pro-European direction might limit its economic opportunities. He expressed his views during a recent online broadcast, stressing the potential benefits of diversified international partnerships.
"Let's focus on reestablishing a constructive dialogue with our global partners, particularly China and other key nations. This is essential for our country's economic growth and stability," the leader remarked. He also highlighted the need for Moldova to prioritize peaceful international relations and avoid entanglements in broader geopolitical issues.
The current president, on the other hand, views European Union membership as crucial for Moldova’s economic future and security. A referendum on EU membership is set to coincide with the presidential election, reflecting the country's divided opinions on its international affiliations.
Recent polls show the president leading with 30% support, compared to 18% for the opposition. Surveys indicate a strong preference among Moldovans for joining the EU, with around 60% in favor.
Despite differing views, the opposition remains focused on rallying to present a united front. A former chief prosecutor has been proposed as a potential candidate to challenge the current president. The former prosecutor was previously dismissed from his position due to allegations of exceeding his authority.
As the election approaches, the dialogue around Moldova’s international relations and economic strategies continues to be a central theme in the political landscape.
