The International Trade Council is closely monitoring preparations for the upcoming China International Import Expo (CIIE), set to be held in Shanghai from November 5 to 10. This year, the event is expected to draw thousands of exhibitors and guests from over 50 countries and international organizations. Known for its significant deal-making potential, the CIIE will feature hundreds of global and Chinese brands showcasing their products and services. Last year’s fair saw deals valued at an unprecedented US$78.4 billion, marking a 6.7% increase from the previous year. The event highlighted a strong demand for foreign goods, especially U.S. agricultural products, according to the CIIE Bureau, a division of the Ministry of Commerce.

Interest from trade delegations and professional visitors has surged compared to last year. Organizers anticipate surpassing last year’s attendance, which included thousands of exhibitors and nearly 400,000 accredited visitors. The exhibition area, covering 367,000 square meters, reached a new high last year and is expected to expand further.

“The 7th CIIE is entering the final 100-day sprint stage of preparations,” stated Liu Ping, Deputy Secretary-General of the Shanghai Municipal Government. Liu added that city authorities will streamline the visa process for foreign exhibitors, providing more convenient multiple-entry visas. The Shanghai government, along with neighboring provinces, plans to introduce policies to enhance logistics and support trade and investment in the Yangtze River Delta region amid current economic challenges.

Last year, the Ministry of Commerce encouraged key companies to host business meetings with foreign exhibitors, aiming for substantial purchase agreements at the expo. The Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences noted that while trade deals are a major component, the CIIE also serves as a platform to attract foreign investment, with expectations for long-term economic benefits.

This year’s expo will feature six main exhibition areas: food and agricultural products, automobiles, technology, consumer goods, medical devices and care, and service trade, along with an innovation incubation area. Sun Chenghai, Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Import Expo, announced these details at a recent press briefing in Shanghai.
