Production is forecasted to reach 560,000 metric tons, marking a 2% increase from the previous year, with exports expected to rise by 3% to 210,000 metric tons. Favorable weather conditions, including cooler temperatures and potentially beneficial dryer spells, are contributing factors to this optimistic outlook.
The United States is poised to maintain its position as Peru's leading export destination for mandarins and tangerines, accounting for approximately 50% of total exports, according to the report.
Peru's production strategy emphasizes a balance among various mandarin varieties, with later-season types showing particularly promising yields compared to early varieties. The Amazon basin and highland regions primarily cater to the domestic market, while the valleys of Lima and Ica focus predominantly on export-oriented production.
Key export markets favor easy peeler and seedless varieties such as murcott, tango, primosole, clementine, and orri. Peru's export season spans from March to October, peaking from June to August, although production continues year-round.
The USDA report also details Peru's agricultural landscape, noting specific cultivation areas and the prevalence of industrial-scale farms using advanced irrigation systems for optimal yield.
Peru has benefited significantly from international trade agreements, particularly with the U.S., the European Union, and China, facilitating tariff-free access for its mandarin exports. Infrastructure development, including the upcoming Megaport of Chancay near Lima, is expected to further enhance logistical capabilities for export operations.
