In a promising move for international trade and bilateral growth, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and French President Emmanuel Macron held a productive meeting in Jakarta to strengthen strategic and economic partnerships between their nations. The visit underscores the growing alignment between Indonesia and France in key trade sectors, particularly defense and sustainable resource development.
The meeting follows Macron’s successful visit to Vietnam, where France secured trade deals exceeding $10 billion. His stop in Jakarta marks another key step in boosting France’s engagement with Southeast Asia’s dynamic economies. The next destination on his tour is Singapore.
Indonesia and France have already laid the foundation for a robust defense trade partnership. A landmark $8.1 billion agreement signed in 2022 included the purchase of 42 Rafale fighter jets and plans for cooperation on submarines and advanced defense systems. These agreements not only strengthen Indonesia’s defense capabilities but also reflect the expanding trade in high-value technologies between both countries.
Deliveries of the jets are expected to begin in early 2026, highlighting the long-term commitment and economic opportunity embedded in the partnership. Additional acquisitions, such as two Scorpene-class submarines and advanced radar systems from French companies, further showcase the thriving trade in defense equipment.
Beyond defense, the leaders also explored ways to enhance collaboration in natural resources. French mining company Eramet, represented by its CEO Paulo Castellari, joined Macron’s delegation to discuss investment opportunities in Indonesia’s nickel industry — a vital component of the global electric vehicle and battery supply chain. As the world’s leading nickel producer, Indonesia offers vast potential for value-added processing and sustainable trade development.
Eramet is also in discussions with Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund, Danantara, to explore new investments that support green technology and mineral processing — a positive sign for the future of responsible international trade and innovation.
The visit highlights the strengthening of Indonesia–France relations and reaffirms both nations’ shared vision of mutual growth, innovation, and sustainable trade. As these partnerships evolve, they are expected to generate significant economic benefits and open new pathways for international cooperation.
