India’s growing role in global trade is gaining momentum as the country emerges as a major hub for smartphone exports. Recent data shows that 97% of iPhones assembled by Foxconn in India between March and May 2025 were shipped to the United States—demonstrating India’s rising influence in international manufacturing and trade networks.
With $3.2 billion worth of smartphones exported during this three-month period alone, India’s contribution to global supply chains is becoming more prominent. The sharp increase in U.S.-bound shipments—up from just over 50% in 2024—highlights the country’s capability to meet international demand and support high-volume production with reliable logistics.
In May 2025, exports peaked at nearly $1 billion, marking one of the highest monthly export values on record. Industry experts attribute this success to India’s strategic policy environment, skilled workforce, and increasing efficiency in customs and export procedures. Collaborative efforts between government bodies and private firms have helped streamline processes, including reducing customs clearance times at key logistics points such as Chennai airport.
“India’s smartphone export growth reflects its transformation into a vital global trade partner,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research. “The share of made-in-India iPhones in global shipments is expected to rise to 30% this year.”
Apple’s supplier base in India is also expanding. Tata Electronics, which began exporting iPhones in July 2024, shipped 86% of its output to the U.S. during March and April this year—further supporting India’s position in global value chains.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to promote India as a manufacturing powerhouse has played a crucial role in encouraging international companies to invest in and export from the country. While challenges such as import duties on components remain, India’s growing export numbers underscore its increasing relevance in global trade and production networks.
As global companies look to diversify supply chains, India stands out as a reliable, fast-growing partner helping to drive trade, innovation, and economic growth.
