Electric vehicle (EV) sales worldwide surged in May 2025, with China leading the charge as it hit its highest monthly sales peak for the year, according to insights from research firm Rho Motion. This growth signals a robust momentum in the global clean mobility transition, driven by regional policies and expanding export footprints.

Global sales of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles rose by 24% compared to May 2024, totaling 1.6 million units. China’s contribution stood out, surpassing 1.02 million vehicles in a single month—a significant milestone reflecting strong domestic demand and increasing international shipments, particularly to emerging markets across Asia and Latin America.

European markets also experienced substantial growth, with sales climbing 36.2% to 330,000 units. This was buoyed by new fleet incentives in Germany and rising adoption rates in Southern Europe. In contrast, North America saw more modest growth of 7.5% to 160,000 units, weighed down by the phase-out of government subsidies in Canada and evolving tariff discussions.

Outside the major markets, sales in the rest of the world grew by 38% to 150,000 vehicles, highlighting expanding demand for sustainable transportation solutions globally.

This continued acceleration in EV adoption comes at a time when automakers are navigating shifting trade policies, localized production efforts, and evolving regulatory landscapes. In Europe, local production hubs and incentives are playing a vital role in supporting the sector. Meanwhile, in North America, uncertainty around emission standards and future tax credits has caused cautious consumer behavior.

“The key highlight this month is the striking gap in growth rates between the Chinese EV market and the slower pace in North America,” said Charles Lester, Data Manager at Rho Motion. “China’s market strength and export strategies are shaping global dynamics.”

As countries focus on sustainability targets and reduce dependency on fossil fuels, the upward trajectory in EV sales reflects the growing integration of green technology within global trade and mobility networks.
